Motherhood As Threshold: Grief, Change, And Rebirth

An 8-week Online workshop, (Zoom), Saturdays, 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Berlin Time

Language: English

Length: 3 hours x 8

Size of the group: small (8 to 12 people)

“You have a perfectly healthy and alive child, why are you sad?”

“Think of mothers who have lost their babies. At least yours is alive.”

“You should be grateful. So many women battle infertility.”

These are sentences so many mothers hear the moment they try to access or express their losses. As if gratitude alone could hold the weight of the identity shifts, the exhaustion, the part of us we had to lay down when we become mothers.

But grief in motherhood is real. It lives in the unseen, unspoken, unnamed places: The identities that dissolved, the friendships that changed, the body that no longer feels familiar, the freedom and time that shifted or disappeared without warning, the dreams put on pause, the self we can no longer return to and WILL NEVER RETURN TO.

This workshop is not about mothers who have lost a child. It is about the grief that arrives with life, the grief that comes after birth and accompany transition, initiation and becoming.

Motherhood is a threshold.

A place where something ends and something else begins.

A space of discomfort, disorientation, and deep change.

In many Indigenous cosmologies, including If a, motherhood is understood as a powerful threshold rather than a fixed role. Th Odd speak of transformation, endings ans beginnings, and the wisdom carried in moments of darkness and not-knowing. At the heart of these teachings is Iyami, the primordial Mother force, keeper of life, intuition and the unseen. She reminds us that to become a mother is to encounter deep power through vulnerability, loss, and change. Crossing this threshold asks us to let something of the old self die so that a new way of being can emerge.

This workshop offers a space to slow down, to name what was never named, and to honor motherhood as a true rite of passage, once that carries grief, change, mystery, and rebirth.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF:

  • you are a mother with a living child and are experiencing grief, loss, sadness, or deep change since becoming a mother.

  • you feel disoriented by the identity shifts motherhood has brought

  • you miss parts of who you were before becoming a mother

  • you carry unspoken grief connected to your body, time, work, relationships, or sense of self

  • you are curious about motherhood as a rite of passage rather than just a role

  • you are open to reflective, somatic and ancestral perspectives on grief and transition

  • you want to be in a space where your grief is not compared, minimized or dissmissed

THIS IS FOR NOT FOR YOU IF:

  • you are currently grieving the death of a child

  • you are looking for a space specifically dedicated to bereavement after child loss

  • you are seeking quick fixes, advice, or solutions

Both forms of grief are real and profound, but they require different kinds of holding.
